Perinatal asphyxia complicated with multiorganic hypoxic-ischaemic injuries represents, despite current advances in neonatal medicine, the leading cause of morbidity and mortality in both term and premature newborns. The mechanisms of neuronal damage are heterogeneous and include the participation of circulatory, metabolic and biochemical factors. Various biochemical markers have been studied in order to determine the origin and the extension of neuronal injury, as well as the involvement of oxidative stress in its’ pathogenesis. Up to this moment, there is no unique molecule to offer information on all studied parameters, but when used together, the markers we studied can provide useful data regarding the moment, extension and outcome of the neuronal injury, thus orienting therapy. |
