Rezumat

Tales reproduce certain constants, and their script is relatively simple. Typically, the initial situation of equilibrium is broken by a factor that has a disruptive role. This creates an imbalance, but another factor will come and restore the original balance and lead to the final situation. Any story is characterized by the presence of two limits – the initial situation and the final one – between which there is a process of transformation. Fairy tales do not share a common start with novels or short stories as the narrator introduces his audience into action quickly and warns his readers that the story belongs to fiction. Initial formulas in French fairy tales are of great diversity, but there is also a tight relation between them. The most common tales in French are: “Il était une fois ...”, “Il y avait une fois ...” (“Once upon a time ...”). Median or interlaid formulas, “formules intercalaires”, can be found throughout the tale, they mark the end or the beginning of an episode and are less numerous than the initial formulas. They also serve to verify hearers’ interest. The final formulas of French fairy tales, unlike the initial and median formulas are the most numerous and varied. They refer to the hero’s happiness who returns from a journey, to the wealth acquired, or the marriage between the hero and the heroine. The most common are the formulas that describe big ceremonies the narrator takes part in.
