Speech act theory is at the core of pragmatics, since pragmatics studies the rules governing speech act formation. In order to know how to make good use of a word, one has to be able to use it in phrases with a certain communicational purpose. The aims of our paper is to carry out a contrastive (French-Romanian) analysis with respect to translation and synonymy, starting from the classification of illocutionary speech acts. Thus, we will attempt to reveal – with the help of illocutionary speech acts - the translation possibilities from the source language A (French) into the target language B (Romanian); we will also examine the wide range of synonyms used in transcoding the two languages compared. The context determines the choice of a specific synonym by the translator in the translation process. Moreover, the communication purpose accounts for the set of translation techniques employed. In order to illustrate our research object, we are going to select nuanced examples of illocutionary speech acts (in order to highlight their multiplicity) expressed by means of the same performative verb, that serves to introduce the call, to identify the speech act to be accomplished, namely determine the interlocutor to act in a certain way (a mitigated command) – be it implicit or explicit – according to Searle’s classification criteria. It should be mentioned that all the classification criteria are legitimate, however, for the purpose of our paper, we will rely on the set of criteria proposed by J. Searle, which are, actually, quite numerous. |
