Studiile filosofice asupra emoţiilor datează de la grecii şi romanii antici. De atunci, au fost create mai mult de 90 de definiţii ale emoţiilor şi la ziua de azi există multe teorii ale emoţiilor. Acest articol revizuieşte teoria emoţiilor James-Lange, precum şi versiunea modificată de către cercetătorii neurologi a acesteia, teoria diferenţială a emoţiilor, teoria credinţă-dorinţă,teoriile estimative, teoriile cognitive şi teoriile dimensionale cu o nouă teorie „clepsidră” a emoţiilor.

Philosophical studies on emotions date back to ancient Greeks and Romans. Since then, more than 90 definitions of emotions have been offered and there are many theories of emotion. This article reviews the James-Lange theory of emotions as well as neuroscientists’ modified version of it, the differential emotions theory, the belief–desire theory, appraisal theories, cognitive theories and dimensional theories with a new hourglass theory of emotions.
