The author speaks about the plastic language following and defines the stylistic features perceived by artists, resulting from the two directions of development of the art of painting a human’s portrait: realistic or idealistic. Innovative elements used by Roman sculptors are also revealed in the article. The present paper is a starting point for further research referring to the influence of the Roman portrait on plastic arts and European culture as well as the external impact experienced by it.
