Rezumat | |||||
In the present paper, a first part of a longer study, I examine defining and description as discursive practices in philosophy. In the first section, I argue that the choice of various discursive practices in philosophy by an author is linked with the choice of a method and with the attitude towards a tradition, audience, and subject matter. In the second section, I present a few accounts of defining as compared to describing, as philosophical discursive practices. The third section is dedicated to Mallet’s account of describing in the French Encyclopedie, where he considers description as an imperfect form definition. In the fourth section, I present Condillac’s account of “analysis”, which I read as a descriptive practice. Condillac contests the classic valuation of definitions over descriptions, arguing that all our knowledge is due to a (descriptive) process of analyzing and expressing in language the contents of our sensory experience. I conclude with presenting these two contrasting views as expression of broader philosophical tendencies, whose tension is resolved in phenomenology. |
