Soil salinity causes a number of dysfunctions in plants at the cellular level and is one of the major reasons for the decline of crop productivity. The aim of the study was to characterize lipid peroxidation in Arabidopsis thaliana (ecotype Columbia 0) leaves under stress caused by the rapid increase of sodium chloride concentration in the leaf tissues. An increased lipid peroxidation was demonstrated already 4 hours after the onset of stress, i.e. at the early stages of plant cell response to acute salt stress. This effect depends on the concentration of sodium chloride used for the treatment and is more pronounced under light than in the dark. This indicates that the electron transport in the chloroplasts and/or photorespiration are involved in the generation of active forms of oxygen under salt stress. The increase of treatment duration does not lead to a further elevation of lipid peroxidation, which is caused by the induction of protective mechanisms, in particular by the activation of antioxidant enzymes. |
