Outre le fait que Vassilis Alexakis écrit en français, il est donc écrivain français et francophone, on observe dans l’oeuvre d’Alexakis un constant départ et un incontournable retour aux sources, toute sorte de sources : des mots grecs, des mots de la mythologie, des racines et des origines. Une véritable investigation du mot, une sémiologie du mot grec qui va de pair avec la recherche autobiographique et la quête identitaire de l’écrivain. Les mots torturent l’auteur, ils le hantent. Alexakis est l’obsedé du mot et du style, l’infatigable chercheur du mot, du signifiant et du signifié. L'auteur fait même des recherches et des fouilles dans tous les sens (il cherche la solution de l'énigme et il va même à Delphes pour interroger Pythie). Dans l’oeuvre d’Alexakis le mot se transpose à l’objet, aux villes, aux rues, aux personnes, aux îles, aux parfums, aux fêtes, aux coutumes, des choses lointaines profondément enracinés dans sa mémoire et qui surgissent tout au long de son écriture. On est face à un phénomène d’écriture-quête puisque l’auteur cherche à saisir le sens de la vie, et de sa vie, à travers le mot et l’écriture autobiographique. Dans une connaissance rétrospective de son existence, l’auteur revisite la Grèce pour mieux se connaître. La signification et la symbolique des mots grecs acquièrent dans l'oeuvre d’Alexakis une extraordinaire importance, de quête et de (re)connaissance, d'une vérité enfouie, et d'une manière originale de revenir sur sa vie, que j’essaierai de décrypter dans cet essai.

Besides the fact that Vassilis Alexakis writes in French, thus he is a French and Francophone writer, in his novels it is noticed a constant start and an inescapable return to sources, all kinds of sources: Greek words, words of mythology, the roots and the origins. Alexakis operates a real investigation of the word, the semiotics of the Greek word that goes with the autobiographical research and the search for identity of the writer. Words torture the author, they haunt him. Alexakis is obsessed with the word and the style, he is the tireless researcher of the word, their signifier and their signified. The author even conducts researches in all directions (he looks for the solution to the enigma and he will even ask Pythia at Delphi). In Vassilis Alexakis’ novels, the word is transposed to the object, the cities, the streets, the people, the islands, the scents, the festivals, the customs, so distant things deeply rooted in memory of the author that they arise throughout his writing. We are facing a write-seeking phenomenon since the author tries to understand the meaning of life, and his own life, through the word and the autobiographical writing. In a retrospective knowledge of his existence, the author revisits Greece one more time due to his novels in the way to know it better. The meaning and the symbolism of Greek words acquire in Alexakis’ novels an extraordinary importance for the author for the quest and the (re) knowledge of a buried truth and an original way to get back on his own life, that I will try to decode in this essay.
