Sociologists call this century a century of neo-narcissism, when the interests are more important than the hedonistic self, the cult of pleasure is maintained by “the pharmacies of happiness” (Lipovetsky), by excessive attention given to the body, to the carcass, to the exteriority. Is the consumer-man, the man of performance still capable of loving authentically?, has asked himself Byung-Chul Han, problematizing through the nature of Eros which excludes the “to be able” and emphasizing “the power-less that, instead of making myself conspicuous, I get lost in the other”. The current awareness of I can, I know, eliminates from the consumer society the “vulnerability” of love, like a dedication to anyone other than himself, and death of the solitary. The erotic feelings fall into a bodily performance, privileging the sensation and the speech that defines it.
