Famine of the years 1946-1947 in Moldova was one of those tragic events, which not only took the lives of tens of thousands of people, but also to a considerable extent undermined the economy of the republic. The secret statistical data on morbility of dystrophy and mortality showed that victim of famine was in one way
or another the vast majority of the republic’s population, especially from rural areas. State aid during the catastrophic famine was absolutely insufficient and leadership of Moldavian SSR, fearing the displeasure of Moscow, required usually too late the
centralized support. Even the formal grant aid was not reaching in full and on time for those who needed it because of bureaucratic central bodies and inability to carry on time those benefits. On the other hand, local authorities in Moldova showed during the starvation inefficiency and irresponsibility, which were paid with human lives. In the years 1946-1947 has intensified the anti-government mood of the population and the gap between the government and the people increased even more. |
