Drought in the postwar years was one of the causes of difficulties in agriculture of the Moldavian SSR. But famine of 1946-1947 was caused not only by the weakness and helplessness of peasant families against drought, but also by the unlimited power of Communist Party, which not only did not stop, but, on the contrary, accelerated
expansion of hunger. Leadership of the Chisinau Communist Party is to be blamed for conducting the requisition of agricultural products from farmers, which was the main cause of mass illness and death. It is extremely difficult to calculate separately the number of deaths from starvation. However, we can say that in Soviet Moldova of food dystrophy died between 150 and 200 thousand people. In absolute
numbers, in the USSR died then between 1 and 1.5 million people. The highest number of deaths was recorded in Russia, followed by Ukrainian SSR and Moldavian SSR. However, compared to 1000 inhabitants, the highest mortality was in MSSR. |
