In the first half of the nineteenth century, the Bessarabian Romanians’ disagreement with the policies of denationalization and assimilation was manifested in many ways. Farmers have shown reluctance to annexation of Bessarabia by means of a mass exodus from the alienated territory and settling in the Principality of Moldavia. Boyars protested towards the Russification tendencies through numerous protest reports signed by the protesting boyars. Whenever the representatives of the Romanian Orthodox clergy in the land disagreed with the policies of the Russian occupation, they moved to the Principality of Moldova or opposed to the indications of celebrating the divine service in Russian. Such resistance, demonstrated by the representatives of several social and professional categories determined the central imperial authorities to promote a prudent policy, which meant accepting some tactical concessions, which have resulted in the legalization of a quasi-autonomous regime for the region of Bessarabia, which operated until year 1818.
