Having suffered defeat in the war with the « Holy League », the Ottoman Empire was forced to look for ways to modernize the Turkish society, so that they can compete on an equal footing with advanced European countries. In such conditions, among Turkish politicians appeared people who tried to apply for this purpose certain advanced methods taken from the Europeans. Among them were and some Christians, for exemple, Alexander Mavrocordat and Dimitrie Cantemir. Subsequently, the latest tried to release Moldova from
foreign domination with the support of an European country, and the grandson of the first, Constantin Mavrocordat, made consecutively a series of modernizing reformes in the Romanian Principalities, which proved to be unique in South Eastern Europe. |
