During communism, Romanian intellectuals in exile, as well as Western scholars have created a significant historical literature on topics related to Bessarabia. Of a real significance for the scientific manner of presentation of some aspects of the history and culture of Bessarabia and Bukovina are conferences and communications sessions held in Romanian-American Academy of Arts and Sciences in the U.S., published in volume in 1983 by some Romanian diaspora intellectuals and Western scholars. Along with a relative detente of the regime, since the mid-60s a number of studies and materials published by the Romanian Exile on Bessarabia and Romania begin to arrive to Romania. During the 80’s in the country have appeared a number of scientific works highlighting the idea that Bessarabia and Bukovina are territories that belong to the Romanian ethnic, cultural and civilizational area.
