Despite severe climatic conditions of the winter of 1916/1917, Bessarabia played a crucial role in the supply with food and fodder of Russian-Romanian troops and Romanian refugees. Food authorities of Bessarabia accomplished their difficult task of provisioning of the new front. Shortage of the transport capacity and poor infrastructure in the border zone between Russia and Romania did not allowed to adequately provide meals for soldiers, but it was succeeded to prevent starvation. Stocks of Bessarabia, a grain producing gubernia, became the resource that salvaged the extremely unfavorable situation in terms of food and fodder on the Romanian front. At the same time, the Austro-Bulgarian-German troops that occupied Romania and capture it reserves were provided with food to the required extent.
