The present article is dedicated to a debatable issue in modern historiography: problem of the nation, historians haven’t developed a common definition of the term “nation” yet. Sources of ancient and late ancient epochs testify to the existence of the term “nation” used to denote a “barbarian” population less underdeveloped than Greek or Roman civilizations. I believe that it’s necessary to carry out fundamental survey of the present period’s sources in order to explain the problem of the formation of nations in the following historic epochs.

Данная статья посвящена весьма дискуссионному вопросу в современной историографии – проблеме нации, по которой историки так и не пришли к единому определению. Источники античной и позднеантичной эпох свидетельствуют о существовании термина «нация» для обозначения «варварского» населения, более слаборазвитого, чем греческая и римская цивилизации. Считаю необходимым более глубокое исследование источников данного периода, что позволит подойти к объяснению проблемы становления наций в последующих исторических эпох.
