Le présent article déploie une approche diachronique sur l’argumentation lato sensu et le discours argumentatif stricto sensu. Dans cette optique, la recherche est axée sur l’évolution des recherches sur l’argumentation et le discours argumentatif. En partant de la parenté classique entre l’argumentation d’un côté et la rhétorique et la logique du syllogisme de l’autre côté, on passe par la délégitimation de la rhétorique et la mathématisation de la logique vers la fin du XIXème siècle, pour aboutir au conglomérat des approches visant à reconstruire le concept de l’argumentation et à légitimer le champs de l’argumentation dans l’ensemble des sciences du langage dans l’intervalle après 1945 jusqu’à présent. La conclusion porte sur la nécessité de dénommer le champ de recherche sur l’argumentation par un terme unique non ambigu et d’organiser une méthodologie unique pour la recherche sur l’argumentation.

This article deploys a diachronical approach in regard to the argumentation lato sensu and the argumentative discourse stricto sensu. For this purpose, the study is focused on the evolution of the researches on the argumentation and the argumentative discourse. The diachronical approach started with the classical relationship between the argumentation on one hand, and the rhetoric and logic of syllogism on the other hand. We have also tackled the moment of delegitimisation of the rhetoric and the mathematisation of the logic late in the XIXth century. As part of our diachronical journey, we have eventually reached the conglomerate of approaches aiming at rebuilding the concept of argumentation and legitimating the field of argumentation studies among the language sciences in the period that followed 1945 until present. The conclusion sets forth the need to find a single non-ambiguous term to name the field of research on the argumentation and to organize a unified methodology to be applied in the research conducted in the field of the argumentation.
