У статті досліджуються питання використання історичного методу під час пізнання еволюції інституту покарання неповнолітніх. Автором виокремлюються такі підходи до періодизації розвитку інституту покарання неповнолітніх: періодизація історії розвитку кримінального права та законодавства в контексті дослідження загального розвитку держави та права України; періодизація історії розвитку ювенального права та законодавства в працях вчених – дослідників ювенального права; періодизація історії розвитку кримінально-виконавчого права та пенітенціарної системи України; періодизація історії розвитку кримінального права та законодавства; періодизація історії розвитку правової політики у сфері протидії злочинності та кримінально-правової політики.

The questions of usage of historical method during the knowledge of evolution of the institution of the punishment of minors are investigated in the article. The author points out such approaches to periodization of development of the institution of the punishment of minors: periodization of the history of the development of criminal law and legislation in the context of overall development studies of State and Law of Ukraine; periodization of the history of the development of juvenile law and legislation in the works of researchers juvenile law; periodization of the history of the development of Penitentiary Law and the prison system of Ukraine; periodization of the history of the development of criminal law and legislation; periodization of the history of development of legal policy in the sphere of the countering to the crime and penal policy.
