The following article studies the Church’s role in maintaining the integrity of post-soviet space. The author demonstrates that the two dominating religions in the region are Christianity (orthodoxy) and Islam, which are currently undergoing a renaissance in their development. It is tied to both the states’ regained independence and national rebirth (return to national traditions, cultures, beliefs),
as well as the need to reintroduce and fortify spiritual values in the postsoviet spiritual vacuum. The author doesn’t avoid touchy subjects, showing the specifics of the soviet and the religious tolerance models, the positive and negative
consequences of religious rebirth that are tied to politization and radicalization of social practices.
The role of the church, and religion as a whole, is studied through empirical and statistical data. Thus, a lot of attention is given to the role of orthodoxy as an integrator of common spiritual space, in the context of celebrating the
1025 year anniversary of Kiev-Russia’s christening. The author deducts that the church’s possibility of fortifying post-soviet space is great, but is also not used to its full potential. At the same time, the author thinks that the states must maintain a secular character, and allow the church to maintain the role of a spiritual guide. |
