Rezumat

Security and crisis management in the post-Soviet space are no more guaranteed by any bilateral or collective commitment after the intervention of the Russian Federation in Ukraine and annexation of Crimea. From here on out, there are no security guarantees in a geopolitical area dominated by Russia and Russian military troops in the post-Soviet space are the greatest danger to the stability and security of the states on whose territory these troops and military infrastructure are deployed. Crisis management within the borders of the former Soviet empire has become the main problem of European and international security, since the crisis in Ukraine is managed unilaterally by the Russian Federation, contrary to international law, contrary to collective commitments signed within the Commonwealth of Independent States and contrary to Moldovan-Ukrainian bilateral documents. The Republic of Moldova, which is still part of the post-Soviet geopolitical area and has on its territory a Task Force of Russian troops in Transnistria and other military engaged in a peacekeeping operation in the east, becomes even more vulnerable in terms of security after the cases of Abkhazia, South Ossetia and Crimea. The Joint Peacekeeping Forces and the Security Zone existing in the Republic of Moldova are part of a security mechanism that has been articulated for two decades and proved to be completely unworkable in the crisis management in Ukraine. The Russian Federation’s troops and military infrastructure, deployed in the post-Soviet space, including the peacekeeping missions as part of the security mechanism in this area, are the central element of this study. The study attempts to show the danger of the Joint Peacekeeping Forces for the security and territorial integrity of the Republic of Moldova, as well as seeks to justify the need to change the security mechanism in the Transnistrian region.
