Paul from Paul Goma’s novel Din Calidor, is a fabulous figure like Guguta, with an exceptional interior design. Guguta expresses a mirage of authentic childhood where imagination and freedom of spirit knows no bounds. The authenticity parameters include the myth of Paulica’s childhood. But his childhood is situated in a spatially and temporally precise and highly dramatic framework. On a troubled background, Paulica’s childhood is filled with delight, but it does not subject to the same moral code as that of Guguta’s. Paul’s childhood innocence runs into womanhood which is protective, generous, not necessarily always maternal, but eternally seductive.
