The present paper intends to view translation in the light of the recent overly-debated phenomenon of cultural and linguistic globalization and to prove how necessary it is for us to accept this reality. The aim of this essay is to draw attention upon this approach of the issue in question and to the role that English as a lingua franca (ELF) is playing. While “global” English is today a reality that translators have to face in their everyday work, little research has yet been done into the implications of English as a lingua franca for translation studies. Translation studies and various interdisciplinary links to other related fields have built just a solid theoretical foundation which constitutes merely a starting point for real-life translation work. Examining the changes inevitably brought about by ELF in the context of globalization, the paper looks at the impact of this phenomenon on translators/interpreters and their profession. |
