Amylin – metabolic role and new perspectives in clinical use
Amylin – a 37-amino acid polypeptide hormone identified in 1987, is the product of a gene
located on chromosome 12.1. Amylin is synthesized by the pancreatic β-cells and is co-secreted with insulin in response to enteral nutrient intake with a secretory and plasma concentration profile similar to that of insulin. Amylin and its analogues have similar effects and mechanisms of action in that they suppress postprandial glucagon's secretion, regulate the rate of gastric emptying, reduce food intake and increase satiety. They also influence calcium homeostasis and have an anabolical action to the bone. Amylin seems to be an attractive candidate for diabetes mellitus and osteoporoses diagnosis and/or therapy. |
