This article treats theoretically the role of the retail trade in the process of goods distribution from the producer to the consumer through determining and separating its functions with respect to the producers / wholesalers and to the consumers. The way these functions are fulfilled and the present situation concerning the development of the retail sector of the Republic of Moldova are reflected through estimating the trends and development problems of this economic sector.
