In istoriography there is a discussion on political and legal statue of Principality of Moldova towards Ottoman Empire during Ștefan cel Mare's period. In some works it is considered that the Moldavian Ruler accept not only pay tribute but also new bonds of the Ottoman state. Although Ștefan cel Mare, during the reign, continued paying tribute to the Ottoman Empire, which began a year before going up to the throne, royal power avoids his country to enter into a vassal serious dependence towards the parte. This correspond in D. Cantemir's vision, with the first stage of the payment of tribute, with is just a price of place (suffering redemption though cash). Byzantium, Venice, Austria have also paid tribute to the Turkish sultans, and the Crimean khans – Poland. Thanks to Ștefan cel Mare policy the Țara Moldovei kept until the early sixteenth century the status of subject of international law, as it was seen in the Middle Age.
