The article attempts a re-reading of a masterpiece of Romanian literature through notions developed by M. Bakhtin in his metalinguistics. These notions direct to the text analysis as a network of dialogical relations between the own word and the foreign word. In these relations the „bivocal word” as well as its inner dialogism is born. In Memories, an autobiographical narrative, a duplication of the self occurs, often leading to the confusion between the word of the self-author with the foreign word of the self-character, implicitly to the inappropriate interpretation of the author’s message. In the analysis of some episodes, in which the author of the „Memories” observes the stages of human personality formation in theconsciousness and speech of the self-child there are found germs of a bildungsroman. The charm of the normality in which the universality of the human being spontaneously manifests in the mentality and actions of the self-child origins mainly from the truth that the self-author’s word shapes the artistic image of the child’s foreign word.
