The article, Three lifetime vagrant dandies, discovers three primary sources of dandyism – the social (decadent), vanity (that founds utopias / illusions) and art (inspiration and refuge). The vanity has associated to itself two series of dandies: lifetime and vagrant, depending on identity, refinement and weirdness. Alexandru Macedonski’s dandyism is the one which poetic identity is situated at the border of music, image, chosen word and ideal, tending to reach the
absolute and being fed by contrasts and high aspirations and moose. Mateiu Caragiale’s dandy is carnival and liturgical. The third vagrant lifetime dandy is Radu Stanca, whose creation is a baroque artifice. Each of the three has „his centre in himself” (Fr. Schlegel), their imaginary imposes a style of life and creation, being associated with aesthetics, irony, seduction and narcissism. Life as art ties together the exceptional, the bizarre and the foolhardiness. |
