The study represents an application of the Narrative of the Self, a theory developed by Paul Ricoeur, on the prose of Romanian writers who, for some reason, started to write in French: Paul Goma, Emil Cioran, Dumitru Ţepeneag, Virgil Tanase, Matei Vişniec and others. On one hand some attention is paid to „Idem – identity (mêmeté), that is the ability of identity to maintain a certain uniqueness and steadiness and, on the other hand, to identity «as subjectivity» (ipseity, selfness – ipséité) which is an agent of difference and divergence. Based on both Romanian and French variants of the texts, the author proves that even though writers adapt to a higher or lower extent to the values of French culture (narrative identity), the Romanian culture (personal identity) is the basic structure, the genetic code of their structure.
