Monk Macarie is one of the many illustrious representatives of the ecclesiastical music at the beginning of the nineteenth century. He undertook an intense activity for the imposition of the Romanian ecclesiastic music. Despite being taught to respect the Greek tradition, Macarie understood the necessity of translating the texts of the hymns and of the theoretical notions into Romanian. He translated the first book on the theory of psalms and many other church music books. The comparative study of the hymns translated by Macarie and the Greek ones has revealed the methods used to obtain the concordance between the Greek melodic line and the new Romanian text, as well as the importance of Monk Macarie’s creative contribution to the establishment of a Romanian repertoire of hymns.
