| Rezumat | ||||||
The relationship between profitability of banks and the structure of the banking market was examined within a pooled fixed effect framework. The paper also looked at the relationship between market structure and operational
efficiency in an effort to assess the relevance of the SCP paradigm and the efficiency hypothesis. The results indicate
that profitability of commercial banks in the national banking system is highly influenced by the degree of operational
efficiency and concentration. The market structure variables exerted high influence on bank profitability, and proxy
measures for operational efficiency were important determinants of market structure. Thus, the results were biased
towards the relevance of the efficiency hypothesis in the context of the banking system of the Republic of Moldova. |
