Alexanderfeld – a new fossil site of Pliocene age in the Republic of Moldova. There was established the composition of terrestrial vertebrata fauna due to the skeletal remains discovered in the lower horizon of Upper Pliocene of the new fossil site from Alexanderfeld (Cahul region) which included the following animals: Anancus cf. alexeevae Bajgucheva, Stephanorhinus sp., Paracamelus alexejevi Haveson, ,
Procapreolus sp., Cervus sp., Leporinae, Ochotonidae, Trogontherium cf. minus Newton, Nannospalax odessanus Topachevsky, Spalax sp., Testudo sp., Pseudopus cf., pannonicus Kormos. The presence in the faunistic association of such species as Anancus cf. alexeevae, Paracamelus alexejevi, Nannospalax odessanus, Pseudopus panonicus and absence of elephants, true horses and bisons allow to provisory refer these to the faunistic complex Moldovan MN15 aged approximately 4 mln. years which are correlated with
Early Willafranck from the Western Europe. The work includes description of the most important skeletal remains of the big mammals: molars of mastodon, a fragment of mandible and one metatarse-III from rhinoceros, one skull without maxilla belonging to camel. |
