Thyroid status and cardiac activity (biochemical aspects)
Thyroid hormones have relevant effects on the cardiovascular system. Thyroid hormoneinduced changes in cardiac function in patients with hypo- and hyperthyroidism can result from direct or indirect effects. Direct effects result from triiodothyronine (T3) action in the heart itself and are mediated by nuclear or extranuclear mechanisms. Nuclear T3 effects are mediated by the binding of T3 to specific nuclear receptor proteins, which results in increased transcription of T3-
responsive cardiac genes that encode both structural and functional proteins. Extranuclear effects influence primarily the transport of calcium, amino acids and sugars across the cell membranes. Also T3 influences the sensitivity of the sympathetic system and induces hemodynamic alterations in the periphery that results in increased cardiac filling and modification of cardiac contraction. |
