This article clears up some recent devices of formation of the specialized words(terms) used in various fields of activity as well as medical one. Some formative elements are used, being considered as „scholarly words”. In the classic languages (Latin and Greek) they where autonomic words possessing a particular meaning. This meaning has relatively kept (abdomen – gr. „abdomen”) or it has undergone some semantic changes (eco – gr. „home” → ecology, economy etc.).The availability of the formative element cardi(o)- / -card, -cardie is presented in this article. This formative element, being considered traditional one and characteristic of the medical terminology, has penetrated some other fields of human activity. Being used in the medical terminology, this formative element has ennobled itself either through conjunctions or semantic disjunctions. In this article the terms formed by means of cardi(o)- / -card, -cardie are assessed, following its availability in different fields as well as the medical one.
