The fi rst gloxinia was introduced by the famous plant collector William Lobb. The correct Latin name for the species is Sinningia, named after a German horticulturist W. Sinning (1794-1874) who was the Curator of the Botanical Garden in Bonn. The name commonly used by gardeners for this plant
is Gloxinia, after Benjamin Peter Gloxin, a physician and botanist of Strasbourg, about 1785. Gloxinia includes approximately 15 species of herbs from tropical America. Sinningia speciosa, which comes from Brazil, is the parent of today’s hybrids. Commonly grown as houseplants, they can be grown outdoors in mild weather. Their showy fl owers
are pollinated by birds and bees. Leaves are succulent and hairy. Generally, these tender rainforest species are intolerant of high night temperatures, low humidity, alkaline pH, and cold. In our research, has studied the effect of rooting medium in the case of three gloxinia cultivars: Star of Fire, Kaiser Friedrich and Kaiser Wilhelm. It was followed the degree of rooting and development of cuttings in to rooting mediums: peat sand, peat perlite. |
