Rezumat

The article is dedicated to the pages of the history of Chisinau in the cultural plan of 1918 and the early 1920s. This chronologically small, but very important historical period, is studied from changes in the urban socio-cultural space, caused by the influx of refugees from revolutionary Russia during the Civil War. Bessarabia, which becomes a part of Royal Romania, is one of the important ways of escape for the first wave of emigration, and Chisinau is becoming one of the “refugee” cities of the world. The materials of the Russian-language periodic press of that time show the changes in size and social structure of the population, as well as the situation of refugees and the assistance of charitable public organizations. The new appearance of the Bessarabian capital was determined not so much by the significant growth of temporary residents, as by the changes of the cultural landscape, enriched by events, sometimes paradoxical and unexpected ones. An important factor was a significant expansion of the stratum of intellectuals. Practically all creative ideas promoted here since the beginning of the century were carried out with the active participation of migrants, most of whom were related to Bessarabia by origin, kinship or service relations. There have appeared opera and dramatic enterprises, symphony orchestra and choir; new newspapers and magazines are emerging; educational institutions are being established or reformed. Public educational lectures, as well as unusual for the province forms of literary and musical evenings, are organized here. During this period, the concert poster is extremely diverse, where the names of famous musicians, opera and ballet artists, “brought by the will of destiny” could be found. Chisinau becomes a place of creative activity for writers, artists, journalists who had come from St. Petersburg, Moscow, Odesa, Kyiv. Their spiritual and professional experience brought a special cultural background to the life of the city, “new developments in the field of pure art” related to modernism and symbolism (rejection of naturalism on stage, in painting, promotion of new aesthetic values and true meanings in a creative activity). By the mid1920s the “refugee” Chisinau had become a gateway to the countries of Europe for most of its temporary residents, to Palestine and the USA, but the impulses of their creative activity will be felt throughout the whole interwar period.
