Rezumat

The underground galleries in Cricova, Mileștii Mici and Brănești are well known in the country due to their subsequent use in the field of vinification in the second half of the 20th century, impressing with large dimensions and aesthetic value of the environment. An example based on the experience gained in this field is the galleries in the Ciorescu commune of Chisinau municipality. Belonging to an older limestone mine, they kept the imprint of stonecutters armed with chisels and hammers. As a result of excavating the limestone blocks for the construction of surrounding houses, tunnels with a sinuous structure were formed. The height of some of them did not exceed 1.4 meters. At the beginning of the 20th century the mine was abandoned, and the emergence in a new hypostasis, that of a winery, is fully justified, since the underground environment provided a space for maturation and storage of wines, while also being profitable. The environment created by the underground structures protects the wines from temperature and humidity fluctuations without requiring additional equipment to maintain a low temperature of 12-14 degrees Celsius and humidity of 97-98%, which are optimal conditions for the gradual transformation of stum into an elixir with dozens of shades and flavours worthy of Bacchus. Despite all the difficulties encountered during the widening of the tunnels, the underground constructions of the Ciorescu commune gained the attention of the company „Lion-gri”, founded in 1997, that started the process of changing the character of the space in the same year. The initial appearance, generated by the machines and technical equipment used for the excavation, was mostly maintained, while the underground network was developed in a series of technological spaces, passageways for vehicles, galleries arranged for storing wines in barrels, as well as in bottles. Starting from the existing structure, the concept of the architecture of underground galleries was expanded to incorporate public spaces as well. The complex integrates an enormous museum zone designed to reflect the architecture of the houses of the central area of the country and the peasant households as part of the rural landscape. The current architectural solution of the galleries reveals the centrality of the visitor’s position and the importance of its attraction based on the cultural-artistic presence.
