Rezumat

The communication aims to generalize and highlight the role and contributions of the Library and Information Science Department (LISD) at Free International University of Moldova in the context of the National Library System, but also to demonstrate that the LISD staff (since its establishment) has thought critically and conceptualized its activities, a fact appreciated by the professional community, the academic community, various categories of users. LISD has operated multiple keys to professional success: the functioning of a university policy on information-library activity at ULIM (supported by founder, university administrative structures, teaching and scientific staff); qualified and persistent staff; ensuring professional autonomy; LISD positioning as a core structure, indispensable for the didactic and scientific processes, and not as an auxiliary one and others.At the time of the LISD constitution (1992), as well as that of the awarding of the title of LISD (in 2001) - its mission was formulated with foresight, having two components: service in support of students, teaching staff and other categories (we are talking about today's infodocumentary structure), but also "the implementation of information culture and lifelong learning, based on modern information and communication technologies" (care for the future of the user). Let's keep in mind that this formula of the mission comes up to the approval of the Education Code and other documents, which are fundamental for the activity of the libraries. What are the special achievements of LISD, its contributions in support of the provision of quality services/products for the university community, with impact for the professional community (taht could be adapted by some libraries)? These relate to the fields of developing library collections and attracting informational resources (LISD was conceived professionally from the start as a library without "physical walls" – the members of the university community being provided with the information regardless of the place of its "location"); application of informational techniques and technologies (the first web page of the university structure, management of ULIM's web page; electronic catalogue; institutional repository, etc.); permanent orientation for diversification, but also the customization of services/products, offering innovative content activities; transparency, communication and promotion through different modalities; the innovative management (organizational, staff, etc.).
