Aspiration of foreign bodies (FBA) into the airways is a major problem and a major emergency in pediatric practice. Aim. Evaluation of the etiological structure of foreign bodies in the respiratory tract in children in relation to clinical syndromes. Material and methods. A retrospective study based on the analysis of 86 children with foreign body aspira-tions in the airways, hospitalized in the pulmonology department of the IMSP Mother and Child Institute for a period of 8 years (2012-2019) was performed. Clinical signs, radiological aspects, results of bronchoscopy, complications, clinical-evolutionary features were studied in all patients in this study. The following research methods were used: ret-rospective analysis, statistical methods. Results. The study found a higher frequency of patients in rural areas compared to those in urban areas: 72.09% children versus 27.91%. Children aged 1 to 2 years were the most common (55 cases), followed by children older than 2 years to 3 years (17 cases). The most commonly detected foreign bodies were: sun-flower seeds – 40.70%, walnut kernel fragments – 19.77%, food scraps – 17.44%, episodic – bone fragments. Curative bronchoscopy was performed in all children with FBA, which allowed the detection of FB more frequently in the right main bronchus (56%), less frequently in the left main bronchus (36%) and in unique cases in both bronchi (8%). The most common complications in children with FBA are pneumonias (97.67%), often with segmental atelectasis, and the location of pneumonia and atelectasis closely correlates with the location of foreign bodies in the bronchi. Conclusion. Foreign body aspiration presents a pediatric emergency with predominance in young children, from rural conditions. The etiological structure of foreign bodies is dominated by sunflower seeds and nuts. |
