Passion, defined as a strong inclination toward an activity that people like and find important, and in which they invest time and energy on regular basis, seems to be associated to high achievement in different areas. The present study aims to test whether to be passionate by the course area is associated with better performance in higher education students. The investigation involved 495 students, with a mean age of 22.45 years (SD = 6.93) from several Portuguese higher education institutions. We used a sociodemographic survey and the Portuguese version of Passion Scale. Participants were grouped into two groups: Passionate (n = 189) and Non-Passionate (n = 306). A statistically significant difference at the level of the current performance average between the groups was found, with Passionate students presenting higher levels of academic performance. Passionate students tend to achieve higher academic performance, which implies thinking about strategies to increase the passion for the course to be implemented among higher education students. |
