The onset of the health crisis found the youth labor market still fragile after the economic-financial crisis of 2008-2009. The economic and social consequences of the Covid-19 pandemic were and still are significant on young people. The health crisis has been particularly severe for young people as it has caused disruptions to education, training and workplace learning, increased the difficulties of young people looking for work and new entrants to the labor market and it generated job losses and incomes (along with deteriorating job quality). Even before the outbreak of the Covid-19 pandemic, in 2019, one in five young people in the EU were NEET, and two in three were young women. As the pandemic spread, the prevalence of NEET status, labor market inactivity and informal work among young people increased even more than youth unemployment, which itself was increasing globally. In this context, the mental health and well-being of young people have been seriously affected. This paper presents an analysis of the evolution of the labor market for young people between the ages of 15 and 29, between 2020-2021 in terms of employment, unemployment, the NEET rate and inactivity, highlighting the differences between young people in various age segments and level of education, along with gender disparities. |
