Background. Epilepsy is one of the complications following perinatal stroke and its incidence vary from 15% to 54% according to some studies. Objective of the study. To assess the risk in children that suffered perinatal stroke for developing epilepsy throughout the first two years of life. Identify the characteristics of the stroke and the type of seizures that occur as a result. Material and Methods. The retrospective data were collected (by study of the development book) on 154 children with perinatal stroke (period defined between 20th week of pregnancy and first 28 days of life) were collected between 2009-2019 years. The types of stroke and of epilepsy was also studied. The statistical analysis was performed by the variational and correlational method. Results. From the total of 154 children about 39.6% (61 children) have developed epilepsy during the first two years of life. Epileptic seizures were generalized (35.4%), focal (52.3%) and unknown onset (12.25%). The type of stroke was varied. Of all patients, ischemic stroke - 69.42%, hemorrhagic - 19.82% and mixed - 10.76%. Paraclinical examination included cerebral neuroimaging (MRI and/or CT) and electroencephalography. Significantly larger area of stroke detected on brain MRI were associated with an increased risk of developing seizures, which is almost 10 times higher than distance seizures. Conclusion. Children with perinatal stroke have an increased risk of developing epilepsy after the disease. The size of the stroke is directly related to the risk of seizures. The results of such studies can help guide clinicians in counseling families with such children and could be a key direction for future research in the field. |
