Background. Community-acquired pneumonia plays an important role in children’s morbidity. Thereby more knowledge on the risk factors associated with pneumonia in small children is required to development and enforce primary prevention strategies. Objective of the study. To identify the risk factors in children less than five years of age for community-acquired pneumonia. Material and Methods. This meta-analysis was conducted between December 2021 - June 2022. We restricted our search to casecontrol studies published between 2018 and 2022, in MEDLINE database. The strength of this relationship was evaluated using odds ratios (ORs) with 95% confidence intervals (CIs). Results. A total of 11 studies that investigated risk factors for community-acquired pneumonia in children involving 15 278 participants were used for analysis. Indoor air pollution (OR = 1.91; 95% CI: 1.58–2.30; Chi2 = 171.22; I2 = 99%), male sex (OR = 0.99; 95% CI: 0.87–1.12 Chi2 = 15.08; I2 = 93%), non-exclusive breastfeeding (OR = 1.00; 95% CI: 0.79–1.26 Chi2 = 80.35; I2 = 96%), incomplete immunization (OR = 1.62; 95% CI: 1.23–2.14 Chi2 = 70.43; I2 = 96%) were identified associated with community-acquired pneumonia in small children in a consistent manner across studies. Conclusion. Some of these risk factors are modifiable. These results may allow clinicians and policymakers to develop prompt assessment and correction of modifiable risk factors, which could reduce morbidity caused by communityacquired pneumonia among pediatric patients. |
