Background. Globally, persistent Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) infection causes more than 70% of cervical cancer. Starting with 2017 year, the HPV vaccine was included in the National Immunization Program of the Republic of Moldova for children aged 9-14 years. Objective of the study. To assess the knowledge, attitudes and practices of healthcare professionals towards HPV infection and vaccination. Material and methods. In order to achieve the objectives of the study, 163 health workers, including 25 resident physicians and students, responded to the online survey using Google Forms with 20 questions included on: (1) HPV infection; (2) HPV vaccine; (3) promoting HPV vaccination. Results. Only 16% of respondents demonstrated a satisfactory level of knowledge about the diseases caused by HPV infection. However, 89% of them knew that the evolution of this infection may be asymptomatic for long period of time, and 49% of respondents recognized smoking as a risk factor for cervical cancer. The majority of participants (80.9%) expressed the view that HPV vaccine is not harmful to child’s health, but 53% said that pregnant women should not be vaccinated against HVP infection, which indicates a lack of confidence in the safety of the vaccine. Although 83% of healthcare workers reported being confident in providing patients with information about the HPV vaccine, 17% of them had been skeptical. Conclusions. There is a need to increase the promotion of standardized messages on HPV vaccination among healthcare workers in order to strengthen their knowledge, attitudes, and practices in working with the target population. |
