In order to have a better knowledge and perception of our place in history and worldwide, for an appropriate approach of the Bessarabia issue, we must take into account the context in which the Danubian principalities have evolved. For centuries,
Wallachia and Moldavia have had the “mission” to stand against countless incursions and invasions. According to a prestigious local publication: “while we were under Tatar assault, in year 1240 the first University is founded in Naples. When Giotto calls for the Rebirth, here Bogdan is only descending in Moldova. Christopher Columbus discovers a new world, while here Stefan is forced to run from Cetatea Alba (White Fortress) to the Cosmin Codry”... Having already a delayed historical significance to Central and Western Europe, in the dawn of the modern age, the inhabitants of the Principality of Moldavia would be subject to a new cataclysm, with multiple and farreaching implications – annexation to the Russian Empire. |
