The appeal of the medical profession in the Republic of Moldova has been evaluated in terms of medical students’ perceptions and competitiveness at various stages of medical training. The results show that the medical profession is prestigious and is determined more by general human factors (culture, tradition, social status), than financial and economic factors (financial income, material safety, private business). In the past decade the appeal of the medical profession has been influenced by promoting academic and labor mobility at the EU level. The major long-lasting factors that contribute to the appeal of the medical profession are continuous promotion of the prestige of the medical profession in society, modernization of the health system, efficient planning and a balanced generation of human resources for health, and the adoption of a lasting criteria for the selection of candidates for medical training. |
