More than 30 years after the collapse of the Soviet empire, the history of concentration camps in the USSR is still extremely little known. For example, few researchers have followed the tragic fate of the Bessarabians deported to Siberia, their stubborn struggle for survival in completely different conditions: a harsh climate, a meager set of necessary clothes, long and laborious work with long-outdated and worn-out tools, lack of professional experience, extremely poor food supply for prisoners leading to malnutrition and disease. Millions of people were sent to forced labor camps, including women and children, many of whom never made it through the unprecedented tests of survival. |
