This attempt to restore the destinies and achievements of women of Arad, who lived at the turn of the 19th-20th centuries, is part of the study of their history and a tribute to their memory. The feminist movement, inextricably linked with the realities and projects carried out at that time in the Austro-Hungarian Empire, and after 1918 in Romania, also took root in Arad. The Society “Assembly of Romanian Women of the Province of Arad”, formed on January 31, 1884, was an expression of their desire to participate in public life. Its goal was to create a Greek-Eastern Civil School for Girls. However, World War I made its own adjustments to the activities of this society. Shocking news from the battlefields, poverty, hunger and epidemics among the civilian population directed all the efforts of conscious citizens into a humanitarian direction. Since the beginning of the war (1914), the “Assembly” has been active in charitable activities, organizing various events to help those in need. Divine predestination made Arad the political capital of the Great Unification. The best women of Arad, together with their families, participated on December 1, 1918 at the assembly in Alba Iulia. The lives and destinies of women who have dedicated themselves to the service of the Romanian people cause deep admiration. Even though they were in the shadows of their husbands, they supported the national-political and cultural movement. Some of them – Hermina Popovici Desseanu, Elena Goldiș, Eugenia Cicio Pop, Maria Botiș Ciobanu, Adriana Ispravnic – became the founders of the Arad feminist movement. Charitable activities for the benefit of society in times of upheaval and the promotion of cultural and national values and traditions make these noble and highly educated women an example of lives full of feat, because with great difficulty and perseverance they created a world of high values, leaving an invaluable legacy to their descendants. Through these lines, we bring an offering of gratitude to those, whose memory was consigned to oblivion by the communist regime. |
