The armed conflict in Iraq seems to be the place where the presence and active involvement of private military and security companies has reached its highest level so far. According to specialized sources, Iraq remains the territory for which thousands of private companies bid to win military and security contracts from the American, British and other governments. These arguments have allowed some authors in the field of international humanitarian law to describe this conflict as a “privatized” one. This article examines the impact and intensity of the involvement of private military and security companies in Iraq, in order to systematize the consequences and legal challenges posed by it for the entire system of ensuring compliance with the rules of international humanitarian law in contemporary armed conflicts. |
