More than 20 months after the official recognition of the pandemic, Romania is facing extreme phenomena: an aging population, mass emigration, economic, social and political crisis, declining quality of education and life. Health, a chapter in which Romanians were not very well until 2020, deteriorated even more; people with chronic diseases no longer received adequate treatment, isolation accentuated lack of exercise and excessive and poor quality nutrition. These, along with the concern about the pandemic, have led to an increase in body weight and obesity, as well as the diseases associated with them: type II diabetes, heart disease, osteoarticular diseases, depression, and burnout. The pandemic has also highlighted the growing relevance of social and economic inequalities in Europe. Democracies have also declined in traditional countries; responses to the health crisis have been disproportionate and have affected more vulnerable and marginalized groups, especially women, people with disabilities, the elderly, and the homeless. The picture is gloomy. The quality of life in Romania deeply deteriorated, to which education contributes significantly. Romania is much worse in terms of education than in many other parameters taken into account to assess quality of life and social welfare, according to the Social Progress Index by Social Progress Imperative / Deloitte, published in November 2021. Among the 163 countries analyzed in the study, according to the analyzed criteria, Romania ranks 45th, being the last among European countries. Romanian education registers, much weaker results, ranking much lower in the ranking of quality of life. Romanian education has a lot to change even where, at least in documents, they seem to be doing well, recently said Andreas Schleicher, Director of Education of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development. The paper conveys this warning that ignored in the continuation of each individual, and the authority will have irreparable negative consequences for the Romanian people. |
