Infective endocarditis in patients with valvular prostheses
Prosthetic valve endocarditis (EIVP) is a microbial or fungal infection in patients with
prosthetic heart valves. EIVP is considered to be the most severe form of infective endocarditis
(IE) with an incidence of 0,3–1,2% of patients per year and growing at 1–6% of patients with
prosthetic heart valves, affecting most frequently men. EIVP is divided into two forms: early -
developing in the first year after surgery and late - after one year after surgery, which differ
significantly in etiology, evolution and behavior treatment. The risk of EIVP is greater in the first
three months after valve replacement, and rises until the sixth month with a gradual decline over
the next 12 months postoperatively. EIVP is a serious disease with obscure clinical
manifestations, often masked, with severe complications: congestive heart failure, kidney failure,
thromboembolism, myocarditis, pericarditis, neurological complications, with a high mortality
rate. |
